Cox data cap: the terms, the Spectrum change and alternatives

Cox plans have come with 1.25 TB of data a month and overage charges past it. Since Charter bought Cox, cox.com sells Spectrum plans with unlimited data, but a plan started with Cox keeps its terms until you change it. The FCC data lists Cox in 30 of the cities we cover.

The data cap, in Cox's own words

Cox's data usage page says its residential internet plans include 1.25 TB (1,280 GB) of data a month, counting both downloads and uploads. The allowance resets with each monthly usage cycle, which runs on different dates from the bill.

The first time a household goes over, Cox applies a one-time courtesy credit for that cycle. After that it adds 50 GB blocks at $10 each, up to $100 in overage charges a month. Cox sells an Unlimited plan and a 500 GB Additional Data Plan for an additional monthly charge; its page does not list those prices.

ConnectAssist, Cox's low-income tier, also includes 1.25 TB, and Cox says it carries no data overage charges.

Cox's FCC broadband labels, in the last copy of its label file we hold (collected September 7, 2026): 9 of its 41 label plans list 1,280 GB a month; the rest do not state one.

What changed with Spectrum

Charter, the company behind Spectrum, closed its purchase of Cox in August 2026 and said it would bring Spectrum pricing and packaging to the Cox footprint by mid-September (Light Reading).

Cox's site now carries the Spectrum brand, and its page on adding data says that when you connect to Spectrum Internet, unlimited data is included, with no data caps or overage fees (cox.com).

Existing plans did not switch over on their own. A Spectrum spokesperson told Arizona customers that legacy Cox customers would see no changes to their current bills, products or services unless they chose to make changes (azfamily). Cox's data usage page still describes the allowance above, so a plan started with Cox can keep it until you change plans.

What people say about it

Since October 1, 2024, 190 posts and comments in 53 threads on the subreddits of 6 Cox cities discussed Cox's data cap. We read them, and posts on r/CoxCommunications, and these patterns repeat.

  • The allowance matters most to large households, gamers and people who work from home. Many others say they never came close to it.
  • Unlimited data usually cost extra each month, and the better offers people describe came when they called to cancel or when a fiber provider started building nearby.
  • Since the Spectrum switch, people report Spectrum-branded plans with unlimited data included, but also existing plans that kept the allowance, new plans whose fine print still listed it, and data usage warnings that kept arriving after a switch.
  • Some who moved to a Spectrum-branded plan reported a lower upload speed than on their Cox plan, so compare upload as well as download before changing.

City by city

Before you change plans or providers

  1. See how much you use: Cox's data usage meter is in My Account and the Cox app, and Cox sends alerts as you pass thresholds.

  2. Find out which plan you are on. A plan started with Cox can keep the allowance until you change it.

  3. If you go over often, ask about a Spectrum-branded plan with unlimited data, and compare the price after any promotion, the upload speed and the equipment terms before agreeing.

  4. Compare the other providers at your address: check your address on the FCC map, then read each plan's broadband label for its data allowance.

Questions

Does Cox still have a data cap?

Cox's data usage page says its residential plans include 1.25 TB (1,280 GB) of data a month. Since Charter's purchase of Cox, cox.com says Spectrum Internet plans include unlimited data with no data caps or overage fees, while existing Cox plans continue unchanged unless you change them. Which terms apply depends on your plan.

What happens if I go over the Cox data cap?

After a one-time courtesy credit the first time you go over, Cox adds 50 GB blocks at $10 each, up to $100 in overage charges a month, according to its data usage page.

Will my old Cox plan switch to unlimited data on its own?

A Spectrum spokesperson told Arizona customers in October 2026 that legacy Cox customers would see no changes to their bills, products or services unless they chose to make changes. To drop the allowance, ask about moving to a Spectrum-branded plan and compare its price, speeds and terms first.
